The Exodus 47 was an American ship, largely American crewed. JASHP recently located Bernstein's obscure, forgotten grave, undertaking to properly repair it. JASHP appropriately preserved his memory while honoring his sacrifice on behalf of over 4,500 Holocaust refugees on board.

While in international waters, the ship was attacked by the British, captured and taken to Haifa. The refugees were off loaded to awaiting prison ships and taken back to "Camps" in Europe.

The Exodus story shocked the world.  The ship was renamed by the renowned journalist Ruth Gruber, as the "Ship that Launched a Nation".
