NameDescription
DocumentFrieda SalvendyBecause of the dark nights of the Holocaust, many stories of lives lost are slipping away into the grey mist of forgottenness. A small candle of memory was lit against the darkness by JASHP. Her gravesite, unmarked in a Malvern cemetery, has no tombstone. The cemetery tombstone problem is being addressed by the Jewish American Society for Historic Preservation, U.K. Branch with a JASHP funded one. The stone will include a Star of David and a short text about her life. Recently, for the first time an honored historical marker was placed in Malvern by JASHP on the outside wall of the Care Home where she spent her last years. Salvendy was a remarkable woman who strove to give Women Expressionist Artists a voice in the male dominated world of art. She was forced to flee for her life after the Nazis took over Austria in 1938. She found refuge in the United Kingdom.
